I didnât actually have anywhere I needed to be, I just needed to get as far away from Kaitlyn as I possibly could. I let things get complicated, and now I struggled to see any way out of the mess I created.
She was crying before I left, which only made my need to get away more urgent. Seeing her so distraught made me feel incredibly guilty. I caused her that misery by turning her into an unwilling house pet. And then I made it even worse by having sex with her. Twice.
It would be in her best interest if I gave her some cash and got her on the next bus headed towards the other side of the country.
I just really didnât fucking want to do that.
I headed down to the beach for a run, one of the few things I could leave my apartment for without raising any questions. Funnily enough, I never realized how much supervision I endured until something gave me a reason to resent it.
The crowded beach offered little solace as I picked my way around the rowdy groups of beachgoers. I stayed as close to the water as I could without getting hit by the incoming tide.
I needed to outrun my obsession with Kaitlyn, but no matter how much I tried to focus on my feet pounding in the sand, my attention turned back to her over and over again.
I should have killed her before we ever left that piece of crap laundromat. There was obviously no one around to miss her, or she would have mentioned it by now. For some reason, everyone always wanted to make a list for me of people who would be coming looking for them.
It never worked. They always still ended up dead.
Kaitlyn never mentioned anyone. Except the baby. And that was actually worseâbecause it worked.
I could still kill her.
Hell, if I went through with it, I could probably go to Rijad and tell him some version of the truth that would end in me not winding up dead beside her. I kept her long enough to fuck her a couple times.
That seemed like the kind of thing Rijad would understand. But I would have to prove her dead to keep his trust.
I really wanted to consider that a viable option, but there was a mental image I couldnât shake. One where I pictured my mother in Kaitlynâs place.
I could so vividly remember her, even after so many years. Her dark hair pulled into a tight knot and worry lines marring her otherwise smooth skin as she kissed me goodbye before leaving to work. She would never say what she did when she left the sanctity of our small home, and I was smart enough never to ask. As an adult, I recognized the signs that she likely worked quietly as a prostitute to support us.
She did everything in her power to protect me.
When the war came, she calculated every move to maximize our chances of survival. The first
